Central Asian Grid Disruption Cuts Power to Four Countries

A widespread power failure across the interconnected Central Asian grid cut electricity supplies to millions of consumers in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan on August 14, 2026, before power was restored within two hours. Regional authorities have provided conflicting accounts regarding the initial trigger of the blackout.

Kazakh national grid operator KEGOC said the incident began at 14:37 local time when two hydro units totaling 600 megawatts tripped at Kyrgyzstan’s Toktogul hydropower plant. According to the operator, the sudden loss of generation overloaded Kazakhstan’s North, East, and South high-voltage transit corridor. Automated protection systems disconnected 500-kilovolt transmission lines, isolating southern Kazakhstan from the national network and the regional power pool. The resulting power deficit in Kazakhstan exceeded 2,800 megawatts, halting subway trains and traffic lights in Almaty and disrupting supplies across several southern and central regions.

The Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy presented a different sequence of events, stating that an external high-voltage line in Kazakhstan disconnected at 15:34 local time. Bishkek officials said the disconnection forced the regional network into isolated operation, prompting protective relays to shed load to shield equipment from overloads, without mentioning any initial generator trips at Toktogul.

The Central Asian power system operates as a unified ring where national grids exchange power in parallel. The sudden breakup of the grid caused severe frequency and voltage fluctuations, prompting automated load-shedding systems in Tajikistan to cut electricity supplies to Dushanbe, Khujand, and surrounding areas. Network monitor Cloudflare Radar recorded a 45 percent drop in Tajik internet traffic during the incident. Tajikistan’s energy ministry ruled out any equipment failure at its Nurek hydropower facility and formed a commission to investigate the disruption.

The Toktogul hydropower plant on the Naryn River is the largest generating asset in Kyrgyzstan and provides essential frequency regulation for the regional grid. The facility completed a comprehensive modernization in late 2025, which raised its installed capacity from 1,200 to 1,440 megawatts. Normal operations across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan were fully re-established by the evening, while joint technical teams continue to assess the causes of the desynchronization.
