Kyrgyzstan cancels auctions for 1.5 gigawatts of renewable energy

Kyrgyzstan’s state-run Green Energy Fund has canceled planned auctions for renewable energy projects totaling more than 1.5 gigawatts of capacity. The auctions, which were scheduled for April 3 and April 13, 2026, involved land plots for solar power plants and small-scale hydroelectric stations. Authorities cited force majeure as the reason for the decision, though they did not provide specific details regarding the nature of these circumstances.

The cancellation halts the development of 13 small hydropower sites distributed across the Issyk-Kul, Osh, Jalal-Abad, Talas, and Chuy regions. These projects varied in scale, ranging from 2-megawatt units in the Nookat district to a 35-megawatt facility in the Kadamjay district. Another project involved a 22.5-megawatt plant located within the Kojokelen forest reserve.

Current regulations allow the fund to withdraw tenders no later than five days before their scheduled start. The application process for investors has been suspended, and the government has not yet indicated if the auctions will be rescheduled. Prior to the announcement, the fund had been accepting documentation from potential bidders in Bishkek.

Some of the proposed facilities were intended to integrate into the national grid through high-voltage lines connected to the Toktogul hydropower station (the primary generation source for the country). Market participants are currently awaiting further clarification from the Cabinet of Ministers regarding the status of the land parcels previously offered for development.
