Kyrgyzstan expands Kambarata–2 hydropower plant with international backing

Kyrgyzstan has commenced the installation of a second generating unit at the Kambarata–2 hydropower plant, according to the country’s Ministry of Energy. The project aims to increase domestic electricity production and improve the stability of the national grid as the Central Asian nation seeks to address seasonal power shortages.

The Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development is providing the financing for the expansion, while German engineering firm Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG is overseeing technical supervision. The project is divided into three separate contracts to facilitate international expertise. A consortium known as DEC–SM is handling the first two lots, while Sinohydro Bureau 16 has been contracted for the third.

Site preparation and preliminary construction are currently underway at the facility. Contractors have completed the concrete foundations for administrative and residential buildings to house technical personnel. Workers have also begun assembling metal frameworks and roof elements for the site infrastructure.

Technical inspections of the water conduit for the new unit and the expansion joint for the existing first unit have been completed by project engineers. These assessments precede the main phase of construction and equipment mounting. Once operational, the second unit is expected to increase the plant’s overall capacity, contributing to the broader development of the Naryn River hydropower cascade.
