Azerbaijan Plans New Hydropower Plant in Nakhchivan Region

Azerbaijan plans to build a new hydroelectric power plant in the Ordubad district of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to expand regional energy infrastructure and improve water management.

President Ilham Aliyev announced the project on state television following a visit to the region, confirming that the facility has been included in Nakhchivan’s regional development program. A government commission previously evaluated the area to address water supply issues in southwestern Azerbaijan, where an approved irrigation plan will allow the new hydropower facility to support local agricultural land.

The project forms part of a broader effort by Baku to increase its domestic renewable energy capacity. The country is also completing construction of a 340-megawatt hydroelectric facility in the Karabakh region as it prepares to export surplus electricity to European markets.
