Kyrgyz hydropower operator begins infrastructure upgrades for winter season

Chakan GES, the operator of hydropower plants in Kyrgyzstan, has started technical preparations for the 2026 to 2027 autumn and winter seasons. The maintenance program focuses on the Alamedin cascade, which is located on the West Big Chu Canal near Bishkek. This infrastructure work also includes the Bystrovskaya hydropower plant, a facility situated on an irrigation branch of the Chu River in the Kemin district.

The operator intends to complete major overhauls on four turbines across the Alamedin cascade during the current year. These projects involve the first units at HPP-3 and HPP-4, as well as the second units at HPP-5 and HPP-6. Maintenance teams have concluded work on the second unit at the Bystrovskaya site and are currently performing technical procedures on the first unit at HPP-1.

Engineers are also reconstructing the second generator at HPP-6, where they have replaced the stator winding insulation. High-voltage testing and electrical measurements are currently being conducted by local automation and protection services. This specific unit is expected to return to commercial operation by the middle of June.

Beyond the primary generating units, the maintenance schedule includes 299 preventive operations on auxiliary equipment and hydraulic structures. These measures are designed to prevent technical failures during periods of peak electricity consumption in the winter months.
