The Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) has signed an agreement to finance the construction of a surface spillway at the Kambarata-2 hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan. The infrastructure project is part of a broader expansion of generating capacity on the Naryn River.
Kyrgyz Finance Minister Ruslan Suinaliev and EFSD Managing Director Yaroslav Mandron signed the investment agreement following negotiations between the fund and Adylbek Kasymaliev, a representative of the Kyrgyz presidential administration. The meetings also covered ongoing projects and future investment plans in the country’s energy, transport, and agricultural sectors.
The new spillway is technically necessary to ensure the safe operation of the reservoir and plant during capacity expansion and to manage water discharge during seasonal floods. The fund is already financing the installation of a second hydraulic unit at Kambarata-2, which is expected to add 120 megawatts of capacity to the national power grid.
This is not the first hydropower project funded by the regional institution in Kyrgyzstan. The EFSD previously financed the modernization of the Toktogul hydropower plant, where the replacement of obsolete equipment increased the facility’s output capacity by 240 megawatts.
