Uzbekistan’s state hydropower producer, Uzbekgidroenergo, has signed agreements with Chinese energy firm TBEA Co., Ltd. to modernize three hydroelectric plants in the Tashkent region. The project involves the comprehensive upgrade of HPP-19, HPP-22, and HPP-23, which form part of the Lower Bozsu cascade.
The Chinese company was selected through an open tender to execute the modernization under a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction contract. The scope of work includes the replacement of control systems and technical equipment to improve the operational reliability and safety of the infrastructure.
Upon completion, the combined installed capacity of the three plants is expected to increase from 27.4 megawatts to 32.4 megawatts – a gain of 5 megawatts. The upgrades are designed to raise annual output to 52.8 million kilowatt-hours, sufficient to supply power to approximately 21,000 households.
The project forms part of Uzbekistan’s broader effort to modernize its aging power sector and reduce reliance on thermal generation. The efficiency gains are projected to save 17 million cubic meters of natural gas and more than 40,000 tons of coal annually.
