Russian power producer TGK-1 has registered the Verkhne-Svirskaya hydropower plant as a renewable energy source following an audit by the Energy Certification Center. The facility has been added to the federal register of qualified generating facilities, enabling the company to issue and sell green certificates for the electricity produced there.
Industrial and commercial consumers purchase these certificates to document their use of clean energy and reduce their carbon footprint. This market mechanism allows businesses to meet environmental standards by procuring energy attributes directly from producers to offset operational greenhouse gas emissions.
The Verkhne-Svirskaya station is the tenth TGK-1 facility to receive this qualification. It joins others including the Volkhovskaya, Lesogorskaya, and Belomorskaya plants – a group with a combined average annual production of 4.6 billion kilowatt-hours. This supply is intended for large energy-intensive manufacturers, who can select specific stations for direct delivery contracts.
TGK-1 management noted that the certification provides industrial clients with practical tools for decarbonization. Direct purchases of hydropower are used by enterprises to lower their carbon load and improve the environmental metrics of regional energy consumption.
