Kyrgyzstan schedules new land auction for 120 MW of small hydropower

The Green Energy Fund of Kyrgyzstan has scheduled an auction for May 20, 2026, to allocate 15 land plots for the development of small hydropower projects. This announcement marks the government’s second attempt to tender these sites after a previous auction, originally planned for April, was cancelled due to unspecified circumstances.

The updated list of lots focuses exclusively on hydroelectric energy and excludes three solar power sites totaling 1.3 gigawatts that were included in the earlier proposal. Authorities added three additional locations in the Chuy, Naryn, and Batken regions to the 12 plots previously identified. The designated territories include areas within state forestry reserves (specifically the Karkara and Shakhtinsk forestries) and the Kozhokelen nature reserve. Plot sizes range from less than one hectare to more than 46 hectares.

The total projected capacity of the stations in the auction exceeds 120 megawatts. The largest asset is the Orozbekovskaya plant in the Kadamjay district with a planned capacity of 35 megawatts. This is followed by a 22.5-megawatt station in the Nookat district and the two-megawatt Kara-Koy project, which is the smallest on the list. Some lots are intended to provide supplementary land for existing energy projects already under development in the Issyk-Kul and Batken regions.

Interested energy companies must submit their bids to the Green Energy Fund in Bishkek by May 18, 2026. Successful applicants will be granted long-term leases for the construction of generating infrastructure. The initiative is intended to leverage the country’s water resources to mitigate domestic electricity shortages and reduce reliance on energy imports.
